Because what I read so far hadn't painted him in good light. Like sure - he wants to survive and SY is an key asset in that, but the way he goes around it is... questionable.

so i answered this ask about it but i just realized that i dont think i tagged it with anything so. MY BAD thats my bad

the long and short of it is that sqq is definitely not a good person in this au lol. granted theres less of the overt child abuse because sy is able to stop some of that but sy still is very much a servant to him. one of the better things about this au is that sqq really just sees sy as a means to an end.. there is some attachment to him but sqq really does not really see sy as someone with his own agenda outside of like. living comfortably. its kind of good in a way that like sqq will grant sy a general amount of mobility around the sect because of sy's vague position and he doesnt reeaally care what shen yuan is doing if its not actively doing work for the peak or sqq.

sqq really sees sy as more of like. a political pawn? in a way. like he keeps sy close for appearances around the sect and he does in some way feel like hes doing charity work because by extension of working for him sy is granted a fair amount of power and status. but he doesnt care what shen yuan does in his free time or for fun. sqq is not the worst person of all in this au but he is definitely someone who isnt afraid of using others to help himself. that and like. its definitely a pat on the back for him of being able to say "well you were sent here to take my place and instead of killing you as was my right i HELPED you and i even gave you your own place on this peak and look at you now. youre mingling with some of the best and the brightest that the cultivation world has to offer" like nevermind that he isnt interested in helping sy with his own cultivation lawl

ok that wasnt short at all sorry but sqq is using sy but he also feels like hes helping him a bit. its a pretty unequal give and take so they definitely have an unhealthy relationship. that being said i think sy goes out of his way to misunderstand sqq a lot because he allows his hate of sqq to shape how he sees his actions.. so he doesnt put a lot of effort into actually examining how sqq differs from the book. also now that ive had a lot of time to think on this au i dont really think that sy's end goal in all of this would be to LEAVE as much as it would be he would want an actual firm position and leverage over sqq so he didnt feel so unstable. that and he does feel indebted to sqq. he could probably handle being around the guy if sqq didnt have so much say over his life

magia archive 4's release has given us a proper name and desciption for farewell story's bovine witch. which is fun, however i've seen a translation for her description passed around and even posted on the wiki, and i'd like to point out that this translation is not accurate. it's entirely machine translation, which is notoriously inaccurate.

the machine translation on the wiki is here; emphasis on particularly incorrect parts mine.

Bovine Witch. Nature: Playfulness. A witch who refused to think of herself and found meaning for herself by depending on someone else. She is always on the prowl in search of new dependents, sometimes uncovering unknown graves in order to find her old ones. To distract herself from her loneliness, she also creates a bull-shaped owner out of the axe of her main body, acting as if she is being manipulated. machine translation -- even through deepl, which advertises itself as better than google translate -- can be a useful tool, but rarely is it coherent enough to be relied upon exclusively. artificial intelligence can only dig so much into the nuances of language, especially with japanese.

(**editing to add; the last part of asiphae's description [首にまかれた小腸のような物質を硬化させて貫こうとしてくる。] is pretty vague about whose 'neck' it's talking about. looking over all of asiphae's different iterations, i believe the 'neck' in question here is either the axe's handle/'neck' or the bull's, rather than referring to their victim's neck -- both of them wear ribbons that are later stylized to resemble the small intestine and seem to be the source of asiphae's binding attack.)

Having some thoughts about the difference in the way that Phoenix treats his apprentices. Like even just in the difference that he talks to Athena and Apollo. Is it because Phoenix took on Athena when he was in a better situation, when he actually wanted to VS. Him taking Apollo on as a part of his plan in AA4? There's something in the question of whether or not Phoenix intended on Apollo sticking around as long as he did. I mean its a miracle Apollo even came back after the forged ace situation. Maybe it's the way that Apollo's unrelenting trust in justice and the legal system directly operated against Phoenix's. Maybe something in the way that Nick is characteristically cagey and keeps the fact that he's Trucy's brother to himself, like he's still trying to keep Apollo at an arms length. There's something about Phoenix's character that still hasn't Accepted him and ..... maybe u guys get what I'm trying to say here but (and it could always just be sloppy writing in the way his tone shifts so dramatically between aa4 and aa5)

There's just something in the way that Apollo and Phoenix's relationship is so heavily built upon secrecy and distrust. There is a weird similarity in the way that Phoenix and Apollo's interactions operate so similarly to Phoenix’s and Kristoph's. Idk

My favorite funny thing on occasion is to imagine sugar baby/daddy dynamics with Tails ships

Something so comical about the fact that Sonic the hedgehog (hedgehog without a home) would be sugar baby to Tails (fox who has so many labs. Like who needs to worry about money when your little buddy pays for stuff heroing doesn't and keeps his bases fully stocked with ingredients for your favorite food

Or like, Tails, who basically ended up being Sonic's sugar daddy, accidentally gaining more sugar babies by virtue of making sure certain characters don't inconvenience people (basically playing damage control)

While I think it's Rouge mainly who would probably suppliment the money for Omega and Shadow (if need be) and play this sort of role for them, it's still funny to imagine Tails insisting on setting them up in hotel rooms because Shadow was just about to sleep outside and saw no problem with that (and because Tails can't very well just let Shadow do that)

A friend of mine also moved that, under this framework, after the idw issues where the Chaotix took a job helping Knuckles get an artifact back, Tails would just silently patch them rent money as an apology for the whole thing.
